The story of Memphis the Musical circles around the quirky collaboration between a Caucasian radio DJ named Huey Calhoun and a soulful African-American singer, Felicia Farrell, who is down on her luck. In the storyline Huey Calhoun plays much of the black music that was beginning to be popular in the 1950s but was still taboo in the scenes of the predominantly white society. The music basically focuses on an age when rock and roll was beginning to be popular. The setting is in Memphis Tennessee with special interest in the 1950s dance clubs of the underground. The story is based on the book by Joe DiPietro who also wrote the lyrics of the musical. In terms of the music, David Bryan (who was also a song writer for Jon Bon Jovi) wrote much of the lyrics and the music. Memphis the Musical first debuted in 2003 and has since then garnered thousands of fans and rave reviews.
