Mamma Mia, the musical which popularize the genre of musicals, Broadway owes much of its success to this thrilling and entertaining piece of theater. With current productions in a handful of different countries and touting some of the longest running production rates, Mamma Mia's success is a mark of its quality. The play takes place on a Greek isle where several humorous and oftentimes unpredictable characters live. The production covers a gambit of emotion ranging from jealousy, to love, to happiness. Surprisingly the quality of the production, which was written by Catherine Johnson, surpassed even the productions biggest fans.
It recently surpassed some of the most notable plays in history such as The King and I, and The Sound of Music, with 1500 theater performances. Other notable awards the production has been bestowed is the theater world award, an Olivier award for best supporting role in a musical, and a handful of Tony award nominations. Being praised for its seamless joining of dance and music, Mamma Mia continues to make theater fans out of those who least expect it.
