The Godspell story was actually a thesis project which was directed in 1971 by Tebelak at New York's Cafe La MaMa. Producers Joseph Beruh and Edgard Lansbury saw the possibility of staging the musical and got Schwartz to write the musical score which as a mixture of gospel, vaudeville, pop, rock and folk. From being the longest running musical at the Promenade Theater, Godspell moved to Broadway in 1976 with 2600 performances. Godspell also became a success when it was brought to Toronto where it had 488 performances. The musical was so successful that a movie was also produced in 1973 starring David Haskell, Lynne Thigpen and Victor Garber. Among the hit songs from the musical are "All God Gifts", "Day By Day", "Bless the Lord" and "Light of the World".
