Chicago, based on the book of the same name, takes place during the prohibition era and is chalk full of deep rooted satire just ready to bite at the flawed justice system that’s the focus of the act. With over 4500 performances to date, there are a lot of Chicago fans out there ready to discuss, laugh about and possibly see Chicago again. The city of Chicago set in prohibition era conjures up a lot of pre-conceived notions on the type of music that would be prominent, and more often that not they are correct, in a good way!
The jazz that one would suspect to accompany the performance is present, however it’s recomposed in an incredibly smooth and tasteful way which helps stave off the stale and contrived feeling that many prohibition era plays suffer from, and instead gives it an incredibly fresh and entrancing vibe. By the end of the performance you’ll have laughed, gasped and probably shouted at the establishment which is often portrayed as inept in the play.
Even though most established Broadway fans have seen it already, tickets still go fast and should be purchased well ahead of time.
