The teams that make up the Atlantic 10 come from the states of Ohio, Missouri, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, New York, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Virginia, and Washington DC. Despite its name, the Atlantic 10 is comprised of 14 member schools. The grouping began in 1975 and was formerly named the Eastern Collegiate Basketball League. Gradual addition of other sports required name changes and soon the group became the Eastern Athletic Association. In 1982, the member schools decided to rename themselves the Atlantic 10. The Atlantic 10 basketball games have been held every year since 1977. The first championship game was fought by the Duquesne Dukes and Villanova Wildcats. The Dukes won led by fuure NBA star Norm Nixon. The last champions were the Temple Owls and the same school holds the record for the most championship with 8 trophies won.
