The team was one of the NBA's 17 original teams after a merger between the National Basketball League and the Basketball Association of America. The hawks became one of the league's top teams when they advanced to the 1957 NBA finals, only losing to the Boston Celtics in a double-overtime thriller in game 7 in 1958, they finally captured a championship in game 6 against the Celtics under coach Alex Hannum. The Hawks remained one of the NBA's premier teams for the next decade.
