Born and raised in the Soviet Union, he eventually immigrated to Israel in 1973, where he studied the piano under the master Arie Vardi. Later on, in the United States, he studied at the Juilliard School. Two years later, he made his international debut with the Montreal Symphony Orchestra under the renowned conductor, Zubin Mehta. Due to such positive reviews, that in 1989 he was invited to perform at the Carnegie Hall, the mecca for classical music in the western hemisphere.
In 1997, he won a Grammy for his rendition of the piano concertos by Bartok, with the accompaniment of the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra and conductor Esa-Pekka Salonen.
