Wanda Sykes-Hall was born in Portsmouth, Virginia in March 1964. She performs as a stand up comedian and actress. Sykes's father was a colonel for the United States Army and worked at the Pentagon. She graduated from the Hampton University in Virginia and was a member of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority during her college years. In 1987 Wanda Sykes started performing stand up when she entered a talent competition in the Washington D.C. area. She failed to win the contest but realized that she was created to perform comedy for the American people. She took a job at the National Security Agency as a procurement officer but still continued to perform in the local clubs until 1992 when she decided to relocate to New York.

Sykes big break came when she opened at the Caroline's Comedy Club for the all time great comic Chris Rock. In 1997 she joined his show and became part of the writing team. The writing team for the Chris Rock Show was nominated for three Emmy Awards. Finally in 1999 they were nominated again but this time they won the Emmy Award. Sykes has since appeared on several television shows; "Curb Your Enthusiasm," "Wanda at Large, "Comedy Central," and she starred on the film "Pootie Tang."
