Van Halen was founded in 1972 by Eddie Van Halen and Alex Van Halen brothers that resided in Pasadena, California. They first formed a band "Mammoth" but later found out that there was a band already by that name so they changed to their current name "Van Halen." When first starting up the band they rented a sound system from David Lee Roth. But really needing to keep what money they had to support their band asked Roth if he wanted to join Van Halen as the lead vocalist. Although Roth had already auditioned for the group and was turned down he decided to join the band. In 1974 they added another member to their band Michael Anthony who at the time played bass for "Snake."

Van Halen got their break in 1977 when the "Kiss" member Gene Simmons financed their second demo tape and flew then to New York City to record "House of Pain" and "Runnin' with the Devil." Simmons had an idea to change the band's current name but they refused and this made Simmons back out from any further involvement. Later that year Warner Brothers Records offered them a recording contract. Their debut album "Van Halen" hit the Billboard Pop Music Charts at number twelve and was known as one of the most successful debut.
