Pomp-rock has always been attributed to the Styx but this Chicago-based band has not always been known by that name. Earlier known as Tradewinds, they started the overblown and pompous arrangements of songs that resulted to what they now call pomp-rock. The band became known as Styx in 1972 and everyone is still wondering why they named their band after the Greek Mythology's river in hell. Styx's debut album which was released in 1970s started it all. However, they only hit it big when they released the album Styx II in 1973. The said album contained the single "Lady" which made it to the Top 10 List of Billboard sometime in 1975. The success of the single was instrumental in the signing of a contract between Styx and A&M Records. With that came a lot of changes including the entry of Tommy Shaw as their vocalist and contributory song writer. Styx's 1977 album "The Grand Illusion" became a hit and landed in the Billboard Charts' Top 6 List as well as produced a favorite single "Sail Away". Then came "Babe" which hit the Billboard No. 1 and there was no turning back for Styx. Other singles also reached the Chart's Top 10 including "Too Much Time On My Hands" and "The Best of Times".
