Smokey Robinson was born on February 19th 1940 in Detroit, Michigan. Smokey is a singer, songwriter, record producer, and record executive. Smokey is a legendary singer and also plays the piano. He is a well known figure associated with Motown Records. Smokey Robinson is a member of The Miracles but also has a very successful solo career. From 1960 to 1987 Smokey released thirty seven top forty hits for Motown. He also worked as the company's vice president from 1961 to 1988. To date Smokey Robinson has released twenty two albums as a solo artist and with The Miracles. Smokey began his solo career in 1973 when he was working as the vice president of Motown. He released his first solo LP, Smokey, in 1973. Sweet Harmony, which was released in 1973, was his first hit single and was dedicated to The Miracles.
Robinson gained mainstream success as a solo artist in 1975 after releasing the number one R&B hit "Baby That's Backatcha". Working with Rick James, the two released "Ebony Eyes" in 1983. Smokey also recorded the soundtrack to the 1977 film Big Time. The 1981 Broadway musical Dreamgirls is based on Smokey Robinson.
