Being born in California, Haggard wasn't raised in a town specifically known for country music. His parents however were from the grand state of Oklahoma, a country music hub. They've lived through the great depression and like many others, moved to California to find relief. These life experiences have been passed down to Merle Haggard whose music is touching yet entertaining. Not to be outdone, Merle adopted the electric guitar at a young age and was one of the first country musicians to use the hard-biting tone of an electric guitar in his music. This not only set him apart from many other popular country artists at the time but it also laid the groundwork for what's become one of the most popular styles of country music; it's played hard, fast, and with a precision not commonly seen in country music.
