Etheridge's 20-year career as a folk-rock singer is enough proof of her musical accomplishments. Born in Leavenworth, Kansas in 1961, Melissa Etheridge got her first guitar at the age of eight. She wrote her first song at age 10 and played regular gigs with a country band at the age of 12. Her first romance with the same woman at 17 has changed her life forever. It was not an easy thing for an aspiring musician to prove her worth in a society where lesbians at that time were not as accepted as they are now.
After graduating from high school, Melissa moved to Boston to study at the Berkelee College of Music. She however dropped out of school after one year and started a career performing in bars and then set foot to Los Angeles after a couple of years. Her music was not what the industry was looking for but Melissa never took chances and became loyal to her music and eventually gained a following especially among the gay community.
This two-time Grammy Award-winning and Academy Award-winning rock singer–composer has proven her way up but in 2004, Melissa was diagnosed with breast cancer. She made her first comeback stage appearance at the 2005 Grammy Awards, bald from chemotherapy, performed a tribute to Janis Joplin singing Piece of My Heart. It was considered as one of the highlights of that evening.
