Magnetic Fields started as a studio project with the name Buffalo Rome. Stephin Merritt first played all the instruments. With Claudia Gonson’s help, Merritt assembled a live band that played his compositions. Magnetic Field first performed to a sparse audience in Cambridge Massachusetts’ Bear Place. The band is best remembered for their “69 Love Songs” triple album which was released in 1999. The album is a great collection as it featured unorthodox musical instruments like the mandolin, accordion, ukulele, banjo and Marxophone.
