The Indigo Girls consists of Amy Ray and Emily Saliers. They girls got started in Atlanta while playing regular acts at The Little 5 Points Pub. They were sometimes part of the Athens, Georgia college rock scene. The Indigo Girls released their first album, Strange Five, which consisted of eleven songs in 1987. The album was re-released in 1989 in major label version consisting of ten songs. The album didn’t reach the top one hundred. However, their next album released in 1989 titled Indigo Girls scored number twenty two on the music charts.
Their most popular album scored number nine on music charts in the United States and sixty six in the United Kingdom. The album, Swamp Ophelia, was released in 1994. The girls also played in the 1994 revival of Jesus Christ Superstar in Atlanta. At the time the play was titled Jesus Christ Superstar: A Resurrection. Playing the role of Jesus was Amy Ray and Emily Saliers played the role of Mary Magdalene.
