Born in Witbank, South Africa in 1939, this musician began playing before the age of 14 and never stopped his pursuit and success in music since then. Aside from being a singer and songwriter, he also plays the cornet, flugelhorn, and trumpet. After he left South Africa, following the Sharpeville Massacre in 1960, he moved to New York where he studied the classical trumpet at the Manhattan School of Music. It was here that he became friends with Harry Belafonte. One of his more known first hits in the US was Up, Up and Away and Grazin in the Grass of which he sold millions of copies. Hugh Masekela also played with bands like the Byrds and he had a hit in 1987 called Bring Him Back Home, which was basically the anthem chosen for the movement for freeing Nelson Mandela.
To date, Hugh has been honored the Order of Ikhamanga, the Ghana Music Awards, the 2005 Channel O Music Video Awards, and the 2002 BBC Radio Jazz Awards, among others.
