The Essence Music Festival or Essence Fest as it is called locally has been held in New Orleans in Louisiana every year starting 1995 but Hurricane Katrina forced the organizers to change the venue to Houston, Texas. The festival was named after its sponsor the Essence Magazine, whose target market are African-American female readers. People often refer to it as the Essence Party because that is what happens when people from all backgrounds speaking different languages come together---they party for a purpose. Droves of people in buses from all over the country are common during the fest. The Essence Fest is not however only about music but it is also a venue for authors, interesting and empowering seminars and good food. It is a celebration of diversity and you can expect diverse music from hip hop, soul, reggae, classic rhythm and jazz.
