The Dave Matthews Band was formed in 1991 in Charlottesville, Virginia. Singer songwriter and guitarist Dave Matthews is credited with forming the band. Other members of the band including saxophonist LeRoi Moore, violinist Boyd Tinsley, drummer Carter Beauford, and bassist Stefan Lessard. David Matthews was working as a bartender in 1990. One night he met and become friends with a lawyer by the name of Ross Hoffman. Ross helped convince Matthews to put together a demo. Ross also convinced Matthews to approach Carter Beauford. Beauford was a local musician at the time. The two began working together and soon LeRoi joined as well. Moore decided to join after listening to the demo that Matthews had made. The three began working together on Matthew’s songs in 1991.

Overtime, a few more members were added to the band. The band made their first studio demo in 1991. They played their first public show at the city’s 1991 Earth Day Festival. Their popularity began to spread with the locals and they started playing weekly shows. The band was able to breakthrough to the mainstream in 1997 with their first live EP, Recently.
