The Dave Matthews band was founded by songwriter Dave John Matthews in 1991. Matthews, a local drummer named Carter Beauford, and another jazz musician by the name LeRoi Moore began writing songs together after hearing a demo that Matthews produced to recruit them. They started out performing with a set list of only four songs, and according to Matthews himself, they were "heinously bad". The trio struggled at first to find a sound that they could all agree with. They concluded that their sound was not yet complete and that they needed more musicians. They soon added Stephen Lessard on bass, Peter Greisar on keys, and finally Boyd Tinsley on violin, completing the Dave Matthews Band in 1992; although at the time, they didn't have a name.
The band cut their first demo in 1991. It consisted of only three songs, including "The Song That Jane Likes", "Recently" and "Trippin Billies". They performed their first benefit for the Middle East Children's Alliance the same year. They also played in the Earth Day festival, and a variety of summer functions. In 1993, the Dave Matthews band released their first album "Remember Two Things". The album ranked high on music charts and was certified platinum in 2002, a grand achievement for an independent band.
Their first full length live album, "Live at Red Rocks 8.15.95" was released in 1997, skyrocketing the group to immense popularity worldwide. The band also performed at Woodstock '99 and released their third album that fall garnering them two Grammy nominations. They earned plenty of other accolades well into the 2000's. Unfortunately, the band suffered the loss of founding member LeRoi Moore in 2008 due to an ATV accident. The band celebrated their 20th year anniversary in 2011, and they continue to be one of the most successful American bands to date.
The Dave Matthews Band has been nominated for 3 American Music Awards, won 1 out of 14 Grammy nominations, earned 6 MTV Video Music word nominations, won 4 VH1 Music Awards, and won 1 NAACP Image Award.
