Born on September 23, 1970 in Buffalo, Angela Marie DiFranco got an early start in folk music as she grew up listening to the music that both her parents loved. She has been known as a hard-working artist as she continuously offers her loyal fans an album every year. She has also been very open about her personal life and openly talks about her sexuality being a self-confessed bi-sexual. In 1998, the single “In or Out” is probably the best song that describes this aspect of her life and of who she really is. She's been dubbed as the non-conformist feminist who goes out of her box and continues to woo fans across the country.
DiFranco's music is labeled as “punk-funk” and her captivating vocal style is comparable to female music icons from Joni Mitchell and Tori Amos. She is also hailed as one of the unusually accomplished acoustic guitarists in town. She started playing the guitar at nine and by her early teens, she's been on the New York coffee houses and college gig circuits. In 1990, she created her own Righteous Babe Records based in Buffalo, releasing an eponymous debut album which she only sold at her gigs. The album was followed by Not So Soft the following year, Imperfectly (1992) and songs like Puddle Dive and Live I Said (1993), Out of Range (1994) and Not a Pretty Girl (1995).
