Born in Cotonou, Benin, Angélique Kidjo began performing early at the age of 6 with her mother’s theatre troupe that performed mainly traditional dance and local music. Since then she has been part of local bands that have been nationally recognized in Benin. With her first album, Pretty, which she produced with her brother Oscar and Ekambi Brilliant, a Cameroonian producer, she made waves all around West Africa. She later moved to Paris due to political turmoil that was an obstacle for her to develop as an independent artist in Benin. In Paris she studied music and married producer and musician Jean Hebrail which whom she composed much of her music. She was a popular live performer in Paris as a jazz singer and came out with another solo album named Parakou. She was later discovered by Chris Blackwell of Island Records and the rest is history.
